Two Weeks Later…

“What is this nigga doing here?” Ashton muttered, shaking his head. I looked in the direction he was staring off in and laughed.

“Matteo, don’t you have your own family to run?” I asked.

“And miss your wife in action?” He shook his head and chuckled. “No, I don’t have a family to run. Not today.”

“This nigga swear his last name is Black,” Jamir said loud enough for him to hear. This was his last meeting with us before he went to Ohio to fix a mess that was bigger than any of us originally thought. Jeff hadn’t given a fuck about his people. As long as he was eating good, then that was all that mattered. Jamir was going to have a tough time getting them to trust him, but it was doable. I wasn’t sure how I felt about him leaving, but I respected his decision to go.

“Nah, nigga. I’m a King and proud of it,” Matteo spat, peering at Jamir.

“Yet here you are on my territory, crashing my meetup.” I tilted my head at my friend. “How did you find out about this meeting in the first place?” His eyes found Shareef’s, and I shook my head.

“All I did was tell him that Monroe was crazier than we all thought.” He shrugged. “Who was I to deny him front row seats at this show.”

“My wife isn’t a fucking circus act.”

I was talking a big game, but I was interested in seeing how today would pan out just as much as they were. We’d been back in New York for two days, and this was the first meeting of many where she would be involved. The guys inside all ran different boroughs under my watch, and with them were their second in commands and top lieutenants. We were different here—a little more aggressive in how we talked. I didn’t take offense to someone’s tone in the way that she would. Today would be a test for both of us.

“Let’s head inside.”

“Where is your bride?” Matteo asked, following behind me.

I chuckled.

“She’ll be here.”

The warehouse we used the most sat directly between Jersey and New York. It was three floors, and we headed up to the top one. I could hear the guys talking and shooting the shit like normal, but they’d all gone silent when we entered the room. I looked at each one of them suspiciously. Niggas never ceased conversation when I entered a room that told me they’d been talking about something they didn’t want me to hear.

“Y’all good?” I asked, folding my arms as Ashton, Shareef, and Jamir fell into their usual places around the room. Everyone gave their own variation of yes, but I wasn’t convinced. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath, praying that I didn’t have to kill one of these niggas today. I’d just gotten everything to my liking after taking over for my pops a few years back.

“Why is he here?” Reggie—the second-in-command for The Bronx—asked, his eyes trained on Matteo.
